Welcome to SAGA
What is this place?
SAGA Inc. is the University of Canterbury’s gaming club. According to our constitution, the aim of SAGA is “to encourage the hobby of gaming, including but not limited to role-playing games, wargames, board games, and card games, and to aid its members in the pursuit of these hobbies.” However it’s far more than a place to stash your warhammer miniatures in between games. SAGA is a social club where you can meet other people who share the same interests as you.
What do SAGA members do?
SAGA is mainly a roleplaying and board-gaming club, although its members are likely to be into similar hobbies such as wargaming. Twice weekly, we meet in the UCSA building to catch up and play games. The length and scope of the game can vary depending on what you’re looking for, be it a fun one-off game or a campaign that takes a year or two to complete.
Where do you meet?
We take up the Lower Common Room (and sometimes the Heat and Eat area), on the upper floor of the UCSA building. You can get there either by climbing the stairs in the main foyer and following the arrow on the map provided, or by going up the stairs outside the Foundry.
You’ll find us up there on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 6:30pm until 10pm.
What does SAGA provide?
SAGA provides, first and foremost, an opportunity to meet up with gamers, but that’s not all we offer. The club also has a large and growing stock of role-playing and board games available for its members to either play or borrow. The committee is always open to suggestions as to new purchases, so if a particular game caught your eye last time you were in the hobby store, feel free to tell us.
What events should I look forward to?
In addition to the regular nights, SAGA hosts a number of one-off events. The club generally provides a board games and barbecue afternoon near the start of the year, to let members new and old mingle and get to know each other, and will usually have one at the end of the year to wrap up. Our annual convention, Buckets of Dice, takes place in the break between semesters in the UCSA building, and regularly draws gamers from all over the country.
