Welcome to SAGA

What is this place?

SAGA Inc. is the University of Canterbury’s gaming club. According to our constitution, the aim of SAGA is “to encourage the hobby of gaming, including but not limited to role-playing games, wargames, board games, and card games, and to aid its members in the pursuit of these hobbies.” However it’s far more than a place to stash your warhammer miniatures in between games. SAGA is a social club where you can meet other people who share the same interests as you.

What do SAGA members do?

SAGA is mainly a roleplaying and board-gaming club, although its members are likely to be into similar hobbies such as wargaming. Twice weekly, we meet in the UCSA building to catch up and play games. The length and scope of the game can vary depending on what you’re looking for, be it a fun one-off game or a campaign that takes a year or two to complete.

Where do you meet?

We currently meet over at Kirkwood Village on Tuesday and Thursday nights. You can find us in rooms KH07 and KH08 from 6pm on both nights. This year our first booking is on February 28th and our last booking is on November 18th.

What does SAGA provide?

SAGA provides, first and foremost, an opportunity to meet up with gamers, but that’s not all we offer. The club also has a large and growing stock of role-playing and board games available for its members to either play or borrow. The committee is always open to suggestions as to new purchases, so if a particular game caught your eye last time you were in the hobby store, feel free to tell us.

How much does it cost?

SAGA’s membership fee is $5 per year. This gets you the following:

  • Licence to attend any SAGA event ever.
  • Access to SAGA’s lockers for board games and roleplaying games. You may borrow these if you wish – see the committee about terms and conditions.
  • Discounted access to SAGA’s annual convention, Buckets of Dice.
  • A 5% discount at Comics Compulsion, Christchurch’s Friendly Local Gaming Store.
  • A 5% discount at Seriously Board, New Zealand’s premier online source for board games.

For more information on any of these deals, please talk to a member of the committee.

What events should I look forward to?

In addition to the regular nights, SAGA hosts a number of one-off events. The club generally provides a board games and barbecue afternoon near the start of the year, to let members new and old mingle and get to know each other, and will usually have one at the end of the year to wrap up. Our annual convention, Buckets of Dice, takes place in the break between semesters in the UCSA building, and regularly draws gamers from all over the country.

In addition, this year has seen the re-emergence of Minicon, a smaller, friendlier convention designed mainly for SAGA members. This convention takes place in the term 1-term 2 holidays, in the UCSA ballroom. If you missed Minicon, there’s a chance that its brother, Minicon 2, may make a showing in August-September, so keep your eyes peeled.

How do I keep up with the club?

SAGA Inc. is coordinated mainly through its weekly meetings and the Christchurch Gamers yahoo mailing list. You can find a link to our mailing list (as well as the various other ways we communicate with people) on our links page.

How do I get in contact with you?
