Ars Lundi: Grand Experiments: West Marches (via Story-Games)

Barring the game of Castle Ravenloft that I played last Monday at the BG&BBQ, the above link on the West Marches has been the greatest incentive I have seen in a long while to return to old-school kick-down-the-door D&D-style gaming. Given that ever since I picked up my copy of Spirit of the Century I’ve been a hardcore story-gamer, that’s somewhat of an achievement.

Thanks all for coming to SAGA’s barbecue and boardgames last Monday. It was great to see all of you there – I didn’t do an official head-count, but later in the day I counted about twenty folks (and that was after a number had gone home).

Thanks go to Francine and Sara for helping out cleaning up in the kitchen after the barbecue, and special thanks to Rose for helping with buying and preparing food, and generally being organised.

That’s unfortunately the last event we have planned for SAGA this year. Due to the UCSA still being used as study space, we don’t have a regular meeting place, and won’t do until the start of next year.

Thanks to everyone (especially my committee) for making this year a success. Keep checking this space for news on what’s going to be happening next year!

Hey guys,

As some of you may have heard already via email, until further notice there will be no gaming at the UCSA as all bookings have been canceled. We’ll keep you appraised as things changes, but as such GMs will need to sort out alternative venues until we’re allowed back into the building.

Due to the recent earthquake in Christchurch, Minicon 2 will be delayed until 1pm today.cancelled! Sorry, folks.

For those of you who weren’t at our Annual General Meeting this Tuesday, here’s the big results:

Committee for 2011

The 2011 SAGA Committee will consist of:

  • President: Jan-Yves Ruzicka
  • Secretary: Mark Berry
  • Treasurer: Rose Nichols
  • Quartermaster: Kane MacIntyre
  • Promotions: Melina Bourne

It was great to see so many people wanting to make a difference to the club – four of the five roles were contested, with five people being nominated for the role of Quartermaster.

Constitution Changes

The role of Publications Officer is now Promotions officer, and holds responsibility over the three areas of publications, advertising, and social resources (website etc.).

Date for Buckets of Dice

The date for Buckets of Dice 2011 has been formally announced to the club as Queen’s Birthday weekend (June 4-6). The venue will probably be the UCSA building, but nothing regarding venue or running times has been confirmed yet.

We’ve set a date for the AGM this year. 17th of August. We’ll be holding it at the UCSA as usual, starting around 6:30ish hopefully. We’ve got a few constitutional changes to put forward, so along with this announcement of the meeting time, here they are for all to see!

9.1 old The executive committee of the society consists of five officers: the President, Secretary, Treasurer, Quartermaster, and Publications officer.

9.1 new The executive committee of the society consists of five officers: the President, Secretary, Treasurer, Quartermaster, and Promotions officer.

9.9
old The Publications officer is responsible for a society publication, the nature of which is to be determined at the Annual General Meeting.

9.9 new The Promotions officer is responsible for promoting the club. This responsibility covers the publication of any materials for the club, advertising required for the club, and maintenance and upkeep of the club’s social resources.

Look forward to seeing all members of SAGA at the meeting that can make it.

Hey guys! Buckets of Dice 2010 was a blast – thanks everyone for attending.

Unfortunately, I’m pretty snowed under right now, so the full report will have to wait a bit.

Got something you want to share with the club? Had a particularly excellent game? Email it to me and I’ll put it up here with my report. Who knows? You may even see it in our next Out of Character!

Hey all, some great news. I’ve been talking with David Taylor, from Seriously Board, a relatively new web-based board game store based in AucklandTauranga, New Zealand. David’s offered us a very generous deal: a 10% discount off of all of their merchandise! All you need to do is enter the coupon code “SAGA” when you check out. While this doesn’t apply to shipping, buy more than $125 of stuff from their website and shipping is free!

Want to buy something that isn’t on their website? Contact them, and they’ll see if they can get it shipped in for you. The 10% discount still applies to items that you order.

I’d like to thank Seriously Board for the generous offer. It’s great to see businesses like this springing up in the New Zealand gaming scene, and I highly encourage you to take advantage of this offer.

Jan-Yves Ruzicka

President
