Jan-Yves Ruzicka

I'm the president of SAGA Inc. for 2010. I've been coming to SAGA events since 2002, been a member since 2005, and been on committee since 2008. I've helped run events at Buckets of Dice (including one Grand Strat) and run a couple of campaigns, mainly using the FATE system or its derivatives. This year I'm running a meta-campaign entitled "A Series of Casual Encounters", in which I introduce people to GMing and run short pick-up games.

Word from Rose on BoD 2012 events:

Have you ever had an idea that made you think I wish this was a LARP, it would be awesome. Well here’s your chance to write it. Next years Buckets of Dice committee is after someone to write a LARP and a Grand Strat.

At the moment we are after expressions of interest, with a simple blurb. Once we have collected these, we will vote on whose sounds the most awesome and let you know.

We need to do this asap so we you can have plenty of time to write it and so we can promote your event.

Please submit all ideas to treasurer@saga.org.nz with the subject “Buckets 2012″.

Deadline for submissions is the 1st of December.

Note: If you win we expect you to commit to having it ready by the 1st of June.

Keegan says:

Hi all I was hoping to start up a Fate game based in the Dresden files world not sure about the storyline yet as character creation has significant impact on this, but it would take place in Christchurch at the height of the wizard/red court war. I am looking for 4-6 players to play on tuesday or thursday at saga, for thise who dont know the fate system I can run a one off with premade characters if you want to learn the rules

Good day folks. More news on bookings, as the year draws to a close.

I’ve just confirmed with the UCSA that we have KD07 and KD08 booked Tuesdays and Thursdays for the month of December up until the 19th22nd. Usual times and days – Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm onwards.

Unfortunately, with the new year we won’t be able to book rooms until after clubs day, so no University gaming for the months of January or February.

If you have any issues with getting into our rooms, I’m pretty sure security knows about our woes by now – my advice is to find someone in an office around that area, ask if you can use their phone, and use it to call security. They’re generally able to unlock rooms for us.

Here’s the details, folks:

  • When: 15 October, 11am-7pm
  • Where: 2/290 Avonhead Road
  • Cost: Free for members, gold coin donation for non-members
  • What we’ll do: Lots and lots of boardgames, and maybe a one-off RPG if anyone’s up for running it.
  • What you need to bring: Any games you want to play.

If you will be attending and have specific dietary requirements (vegan, gluten-free, etc.) please email Rose so she can provide you with food that doesn’t make you die/vomit.

Hope to see you there!

AP written by Ian, thread on story-games available here for further discussion. Dungeon World is a modification of Vincent Baker’s Apocalypse World for D&D-style play – the free version (requires Apocalypse World, available for loan from SAGA Inc.) is available here

We join our heroes trekking for days through the leech-infested rainforest to reach the dread Temple of Ungu, intent on killing Florimel the Spider-Witch. They each had their reasons- Jenk, the Thief, was motivated by dreams of gold- with his wife and child under dire peril of eviction, a fate the heartless rogue claimed moved him not at all. Rurgosh, the dwarven Cleric, was tasked to cleanse this blighted sanctum on threat of penance- to be stripped of rank and wander the land spreading the word of Helferth with but the shirt on his back. Aldara, the elf Wizard, was here to destroy hir former lover- the rift between them growing as Florimels evil did. Octavia, the Paladin, knew Florimel in her days as an initiate of the Order, when she had sworn always to defend the now black-hearted mage. Continue reading »

Hey folks. Thanks to everyone who showed up and helped out at SAN-Con 2011. We got a truly overwhelming influx of new folks who were interested in trying out board gaming and roleplaying, and our evening events were a hit with the crowd too. Extra-special thanks to Mutu, Keegan and Sam for running events in the RP room, and Kane and his team for keeping the board gaming going in the adjacent room. Congratulations also to Max de Lu, our 2011 SAN-Con Sagefight Melee Champion, and to Ian Raymond, our 2011 SAN-Con Sagefight Duel Champion.

The event itself was a rousing success – we had a great turnout and the board-gaming room was full to capacity most of the time. Thanks go out to Jennifer DuBois and the Sci-Fi Society for letting us be a part of the event.

Quite a few folks were interested in joining up too, so expect some new faces at the next few regular SAGA Inc. meetings. If you’re looking to start a game, now’s a good time to start advertising – don’t forget that we have that newly-revamped campaigns page that could do with some love, so if you want to start something in particular, send me the details.

If you have some photos of the event, it would be great if you could upload them to Flickr with the tag “Sancon2011″. If you’re not on Flickr, or are uploading them somewhere else, we’d still love to know where and to advertise them to everyone else.

Hey folks, news on the room bookings front. If you turned up to Tuesday night gaming you’ll be aware that we didn’t have our usual rooms. I’m pretty sure this was actually my fault (long story short: clubs aren’t currently able to perma-book rooms for the whole year, and I only booked until September when I booked our rooms back in June).

The good news is, I’ve been in contact with bookings and confirmed that we’re booked in for the rest of the academic year. So we’re now booked in to (or should be booked in to):

  • Tuesday nights: KD07 and KD08 (as uasual)
  • Thursday nights: KD07 and KE04

So there’s a bit of a change on Thursday nights, I’m afraid. As far as I have been made aware, these bookings are effective immediately – so we should have KD07 and KE04 tonight.

Sorry about the delay – winter sickness plus a busy period at work (combined with preparations for Chimera) doesn’t make for regular blog updates.

The AGM was held on the 23rd of August. I imagine the minutes will find their way out to the mailing list or the website soon. We also decided on a committee for next year:

  • President: Rose Nichols
  • Secretary: Kane McIntyre
  • Treasurer: Alistair Steele
  • Promotions: Jan-Yves Ruzicka
  • Quartermaster: Bryan Burling-Claridge

You missed.

Good morning. As you may have noticed, it’s been snowing. If you haven’t noticed: just so you know, it’s been snowing.

University of Canterbury campus is closed for the day, and busses won’t be running for at least the morning. Because of this, the SAGA AGM tonight is postponed until next Tuesday the 23rd of August. In addition, you won’t be able to get into Kirkwood Village, so regular gaming is cancelled for tonight as well.
